Aromatherapy and Alzheimer’s Disease

There is now considerable evidence that certain essential oils have a positive, therapeutic effect when used by people who have Alzheimer’s.

Most apparent is the effect that these oils have on the undesirable behaviors that often accompany dementia. There is growing evidence that memory and cognitive processes can also benefit from certain oils.

Lavender oil and Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) have a calming effect and have proven useful in treating agitation. Used later in the day they can promote better sleep.

Peppermint oil and Rosemary are stimulating, and can improve appetite. Use these early in the day. Lemon Balm has even improved cognitive functioning in clinical tests.
