ACTIVITIES BY STAGE
PRODUCTS FOR LATE STAGE ALZHEIMER’S
This last stage, severe Alzheimer’s disease, is characterized by almost total memory loss. The person in this last stage of Alzheimer’s usually needs help with all of the basic activities of daily living.
The caregivers role in the final stage is to provide comfort. Abilities will be diminished, so cognitive activity becomes difficult especially as this stage progresses.Focus on activities that provide sensory stimulation.
Appropriate activities for late stage Alzheimer’s disease include music, especially familiar songs from the persons past, and those which provide sensory stimulation. Often, someone who has trouble putting a sentence together may sing a familiar song perfectly, start to finish. Tactile stimulation is important now; Twiddle Muffs, the Busy Bee Lap Pad, and our collection of realistic animals are perfect to provice this tactile stimulation.
Even though communication skills are withering drastically at this point, watch for other cues. A smile or other body language can indicate that the music you are playing, the picture you are sharing, or the video you are watching together is bringing pleasure.
