PRODUCTS FOR MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT

Mild Cognitive Impairment is a decrease in cognitive functioning that does not impair ones independence or ability to care for himself or herself.

MCI is often a precursor to dementia but does not always progress to dementia. In fact, only 10% to 40% of the cases of MCI go on to become dementia, and a good percentage of those become Alzheimer’s disease. On the other hand, as many as 30-40% of people with MCI get better.

Treatment & prevention

As with dementia, there are no drugs to treat MCI. On the other hand, we can minimize its effect, and perhaps successfully treat MCI with some simple lifestyle changes. Begin by reducing or eliminating negative risk factors and work to increase positive risk factors:

  • Quit smoking
  • Moderate or eliminate alcohol consumption
  • If you have diabetes or hypertension, be sure it is treated and managed
  • Treat high serum cholesterol
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Keep your brain and your body fit – exercise both
  • Eat healthy – no junk food, little processed food, limit red meat, etc. One of the best ways to  do this is to prepare as much of your food as you can – eliminate processed food. Read more»
  • Stay socially active
